How to perform

Lie on your back with the band looped around your hands and the middle section stretched behind your head. Bring your knees toward your chest and lift your shoulder blades off the floor, keeping the lower back pressed down. Exhale as you pull your right knee in and twist your torso, driving your left elbow across toward the right knee. Switch sides in one smooth motion — extend the right leg while your left knee travels in and your right elbow crosses toward it. Keep the pedaling rhythm steady and the band tension constant, and inhale evenly between the rotations. Move from the ribs, not the neck, and let the abs do the twisting.

Muscles worked

The band bicycle crunch trains the entire abdominal wall: the rectus abdominis curls the torso while the obliques rotate it across toward the opposite knee. The hip flexors lift the knees, and the band adds constant tension that keeps the core engaged on both sides of the movement.

Make it easier

Keep the band light or skip it until the twisting pattern feels natural. You can also slow the pace and rest your head on the floor between repetitions if the neck gets tired.

Make it harder

Use a stronger band, hold each twist for a two-second pause, or keep your legs hovering off the floor during the entire set. Slowing the whole movement to a three-second count per side also doubles the work.

Common mistakes

Mistake: Pulling the head forward with the hands. Fix: Keep the hands and band light against the head and rotate with the ribs instead.

Mistake: Speeding up until the movement becomes a flailing mess. Fix: Slow the tempo until each elbow-to-knee touch is deliberate.

Mistake: Letting the lower back arch off the floor. Fix: Press the low back into the ground and keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis.

FAQ

What does the band add to a bicycle crunch?

The band creates resistance behind the head, which forces the abs to work harder to rotate and curl the torso instead of relying on momentum.

Are bicycle crunches bad for the neck?

Only if you pull on your head with your hands. Keep your hands light, drive the rotation from your ribs, and keep your chin soft to protect the neck.
