How to perform

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and step onto the middle of the band so it sits firmly under both feet.
  2. Take an end of the band in each hand with palms facing forward and raise your hands to shoulder height, elbows bent and hands at the sides of your head.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes to hold a stable torso.
  4. Exhale and press both hands straight overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  5. Pause at the top, then inhale and slowly lower your hands back to shoulder height against the band tension.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of reps, keeping the band from twisting.

Muscles worked

The band shoulder press builds the delts using variable resistance that peaks at lockout, with the triceps extending the elbows and the upper back and core stabilizing the torso.

Make it easier

Use a lighter band and press from a seated position on a bench or chair. You can also step on the band with only one foot to reduce the starting tension.

Make it harder

Use a stronger band, slow the lowering phase to three seconds, or pause for two seconds with your arms fully extended. Pressing one arm at a time increases the balance demand.

Common mistakes

Mistake: Letting the band slip out from under your feet. Fix: step on the band with both feet and keep your weight centered. Mistake: Arching your lower back to finish the press. Fix: brace your abs and squeeze your glutes before each rep. Mistake: Bending the elbows forward so the band escapes behind your hands. Fix: keep the wrists in line with the elbows and press straight up. Mistake: Twisting the band by holding it unevenly. Fix: grip both ends at equal length and keep them flat against your palms.

FAQ

How should I stand on the band for a shoulder press?

Place both feet shoulder-width apart in the middle of the band and step on it securely. A wider stance anchors the band better and stops it from slipping during the press.

Why is the band press harder at the top?

Resistance bands increase tension as they stretch, so the weight gets heavier at lockout. Choose a band that lets you finish the last few reps with full control.
